Materials sector helps boost Toronto market, Dow industrials surge higher

TORONTO -- The materials sector helped Canada's main stock post a triple-digit increase in late-morning trading.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 102.43 points at 16,458.48.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 218.58 points at 26,008.93.

The S&P 500 index was up 19.52 points at 2,894.21, while the Nasdaq composite was up 75.38 points at 8,021.36.

The Canadian dollar traded higher at 77.17 cents US compared with an average of 76.71 cents US on Friday.

The October crude contract was up four cents at US$68.76 per barrel and the October natural gas contract was down 3.3 cents at US$2.88 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract rose US$4.20 at US$1,217.50 an ounce and the September copper contract was up 1.60 cents at US$2.72 a pound.
