Materials sector weighs on TSX, loonie down; U.S. stocks move higher

TORONTO - Canada's main stock index fell in late-morning trading as the materials sector moved lower, while U.S. stocks moved up.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 41.01 points at 16,533.82.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 120.06 points at 26,873.23. The S&P 500 index was up 5.92 points at 2,960.10, while the Nasdaq composite was up 8.59 points at 8,059.93.

The Canadian dollar traded for 75.68 cents US compared with an average of 75.81 cents US on Thursday.

The August crude contract was up 40 cents at US$57.47 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was down 0.2 of a cent at US$2.16 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was down US$3.30 at US$1,393.60 an ounce and the July copper contract was up 0.70 of a cent at US$2.72 a pound.
