Energy and financials weigh on stocks in Toronto, U.S. stocks mixed

TORONTO -- The heavyweight energy and financial sectors weighed on stocks in Toronto as Canada's main stock index edged lower in late-morning trading.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 6.21 points at 16,083.12.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 39.46 points at 25,541.78. The S&P 500 index was up 2.41 points at 2,803.12, while the Nasdaq composite was down 4.77 points at 7,637.90.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.50 cents US compared with an average of 74.57 cents US on Friday.

The May crude contract was down 51 cents at US$58.53 per barrel and the May natural gas contract was down 0.7 of a cent at US$2.76 per mmBTU.

The April gold contract was up US$7.40 at US$1,319.70 an ounce and the May copper contract was up 0.4 of a cent at US$2.85 a pound.
