Toronto stocks push higher as U.S. stocks give back recent gains, loonie down

TORONTO - Canada's main stock index pushed higher in late-morning trading, while U.S. markets gave back some of their recent gains.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 43.35 points to 16,174.99, after 90 minutes of trading.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 54.98 points to 24,737.22. The S&P 500 index was down 3.80 points to 2,686.36 and the Nasdaq composite index was down 21.96 points to 6,972.80.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 77.53 cents US, down from an average price of 77.73 cents US on Monday.

The February crude contract was up 18 cents to US$57.40 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was unchanged at US$2.75 per mmBTU.

The February gold contract was down US$1.10 to US$1,264.40 an ounce and the March copper contract was flat at US$3.15 a pound.
