If you have holiday gifts or cards to send via mail, it may not be too late to for them arrive in time for Christmas. But only if you hurry.

Canada Post says Tuesday is the last day you can send holiday cards to be delivered within your province, if you want them to arrive by Dec. 25, while the deadline for local delivery is Wednesday.

Thursday is the latest date for holiday packages to be sent with Priority shipping within Canada. Packages mailed to the U.S. should be dropped off at the post office no later than Wednesday for Priority Worldwide shipping.

Canada Post spokesperson Jon Hamilton said, although parcel deliveries will continue through the weekend, sending packages this close to the holidays will come with a bigger price tag.

“If you’re like me and it’s been sitting in the back seat of the car and you said you’d get that parcel in the mail, you really only have Xpresspost and Priority – which is still going to get it there, it’s just going to cost you a little bit more money,” Hamilton told CTV News Channel in a video call from Ottawa on Tuesday.

“There are cheaper options if you’re organized – if you’re not as organized there are still good options, we’ll still get it there but it shrinks the window – we’ve got to use planes and things like that – so it does cost a bit more.”

2017 has been a huge year for e-commerce in Canada, Hamilton added. Canada Post has been delivering one million parcels every day since mid-November, and the company is now partnering with retailers to help prepare.

“You’re really seeing the effect this Christmas – we’ve seen it before, but this year we’re seeing growth of about 20 per cent over last Christmas,” Hamilton said. “That means there’s a lot of businesses in Canada doing quite well this Christmas and we’re very happy to see that too.”

If you’re buying gifts online this holiday season, Canada Post is working with retailers to help provide exact delivery dates.

“We’re working very closely, behind the scenes, so that those retailers can give their shoppers confidence that what they’re buying will get under the tree in time,” Hamilton said.

Canada Post’s suggested deadlines for all international deliveries have passed. Information about domestic and international service delays can be found online on Canada Post’s announcement page.
