North American stocks higher at late-morning, loonie down against U.S. dollar

TORONTO -- Canada's main stock index was up in late-morning trading, helped higher by the energy sector, while U.S. stock markets also traded higher, regaining some of their recent losses.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 54.30 points at 14,963.43.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 293.62 points at 24,877.04. The S&P 500 index was up 39.80 points at 2,695.90, while the Nasdaq composite was up 173.84 points at 7,282.25.

The Canadian dollar traded lower at 76.39 cents US compared with an average of 76.75 cents US on Wednesday.

The December crude contract was up 23 cents at US$67.05 per barrel and the December natural gas contract was up 0.9 of a cent at US$3.24 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up 40 cents at US$1,231.50 an ounce and the December copper contract was down 0.65 of a cent at US$2.75 a pound.
