North American stock markets open lower, loonie trades lower against U.S. dollar

TORONTO -- Canada's main stock index posted a triple-digit decline in early trading, while stock markets around the world also headed lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 113.16 points at 15,404.24 after falling more than 300 points on Wednesday.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 128.76 points at 25,469.98 after dropping more than 800 points a day ago. The S&P 500 index was down 10.32 points at 2,775.36, while the Nasdaq composite was down 29.77 points at 7,392.28.

The Canadian dollar traded lower at 76.64 cents US compared with an average of 76.97 cents US on Wednesday.

The November crude contract fell US$1.02 at US$72.15 per barrel and the November natural gas contract was down 8.1 cents at US$3.203 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up US$18.70 at US$1,212.10 an ounce and the December copper contract was down 1.55 cents at US$2.7650 a pound.
