North American stock markets edge lower, loonie slips against U.S. dollar

TORONTO -- Canada's main stock index edged lower in late-morning trading as losses in the energy sector were partly offset by strength in the industrial and materials sectors.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 6.19 points at 16,131.38.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 39.30 points at 25,935.69. The S&P 500 index was down 16.01 points at 2,872.59, while the Nasdaq composite was down 80.15 points at 7,915.02.

The Canadian dollar traded lower at 75.78 cents US compared with an average of 75.84 cents US on Wednesday.

The October crude contract was down 16 cents at US$68.56 per barrel and the October natural gas contract was down 1.0 cents at US$2.78 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up US$8.80 at US$1,210.10 an ounce and the December copper contract was up 4.10 cents at US$2.65 a pound.
