TSX index down moderately in broad-based post-holiday decline

TORONTO - Canada's main stock index was down moderately this morning as most market sectors declined after a holiday weekend.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was down 57.76 points to 16,362.48 after 90 minutes of trading. Maxar Technologies and Saputo Inc. were among the companies with declines.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 176.41 points to 25,678.59. The S&P 500 index was up 11.89 points to 2,862.29 and the Nasdaq composite index was up 25.89 points to 7,885.57.

The Canadian dollar was at 76.83 cents, down from Friday's average of 77.02 cents US.

The September crude contract was up 22 cents from Monday at US$69.23 per barrel and the September natural gas contract was up 3.4 cents at US$2.89 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up $2.10 from Monday at $1,219.80 an ounce and the September copper contract was up 2.7 cents at $2.76 a pound.
