Toronto stock market ticks lower, while U.S. markets mixed; Loonie moves down

TORONTO - Canada's main stock index ticked lower in late-morning trading as the energy and consumer staples sectors lost ground.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 20.72 points to 16,498.52, after 90 minutes of trading.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 39.85 points to 25,159.74. The S&P 500 index was up 0.14 of a point to 2,809.69 and the Nasdaq composite index was down 17.42 points to 7,837.70.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 75.62 cents US, down from an average value of 75.83 cents US on Tuesday.

The September crude contract was down 33 cents to US$66.83 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was down one cent to US$2.73 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was down $3.90 to US$1,223.40 an ounce and the September copper contract was down two cents to US$2.73 a pound.
