Toronto stock index dips, Canada's dollar up

TORONTO -- Canada's main stock index was down slightly this morning, with the country's largest auto parts manufacturers contributing to the decline.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was down 18.49 points to 16,371.64, after 90 minutes of trading. Magna International stock was down more than four per cent after dropping $3.28 to $73.70.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 75.12 points to 25,166.82. The S&P 500 index was down 0.59 of a point to 2,819.81 and the Nasdaq composite index was up 6.82 points to 7,847.59.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 76.20 cents US, up from Tuesday's average value of 76.01 cents US.

The September crude contract was down two cents to US$68.50 per barrel and the September natural gas contract was up three cents to US$2.75 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up $3.70 to US$1,229.20 an ounce and the September copper contract was unchanged at US$2.81 a pound.
