Toronto stock index pulls back from record high close, loonie trades lower

TORONTO -- Canada's main stock index was lower in late-morning trading after closing at a record high a day earlier.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 60.27 points to 16,360.68, after 90 minutes of trading.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 159.23 points to 24,498.57. The S&P 500 index was down 12.80 points to 2,754.52 and the Nasdaq composite index was down 44.24 points to 7,737.27.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 75.17 cents US, down from an average value of 75.18 cents US on Wednesday.

The August crude contract was up 15 cents to US$65.86 per barrel and the July natural gas contract was up one cent to US$2.98 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was down US$5.40 cents to US$1,269.10 an ounce and the July copper contract was unchanged at to US$3.04 a pound.
