Toronto stocks tick lower, U.S. stock markets mixed, loonie falls

TORONTO -- Canada's main stock index ticked lower Monday, while U.S. stock markets were also little changed in late-morning trading.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 1.60 points to 16,037.66, after 90 minutes of trading.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.91 of a point to 23,423.12. The S&P 500 index was down 0.41 of a point to 2,581.89 and the Nasdaq composite index was down 3.12 points to 6,747.82.

The Bank of Canada, which publishes the daily average exchange rate of the Canadian dollar, is closed in lieu of Remembrance Day. In international trading the Canadian dollar was at 78.61 cents US, down from an average price of 78.85 cents US on Friday.

The December crude contract was up 17 cents to US$56.91 per barrel and the December natural gas contract was down one cent to US$3.20 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up US$4.60 to US$1,278.80 an ounce and the December copper contract was up five cents to US$3.13 a pound.
